Strengthening Compliance and Setting Us Up for Success

“Good records management is the foundation of a well-run organisation, and it supports compliance, accountability, and better decision-making.”

Michelle Dillon, our Records Superstar has worked in records and governance for almost 10 years, and this is not her first stint working for a remote council either as she has previously worked for Diamantina Shire Council.  She says we are her favourite council so far!

You may not even know she exists as she works quietly behind the scenes and unless she is onsite running training sessions for us, she works remotely. We wanted to do this shout-out about Michelle because she is one of the unseen superstars that keeps council running as it should.

Since stepping into the role of Records Management Officer, her focus has been on improving how Council manages its records, making sure we’re heading in the right direction when it comes to compliance.  Council had lost nearly all its physical records in the flooding resulting from Tropical Cyclone Jasper and our digital records system wasn’t compliant.  Finding information was a challenging task at the best of times, this in turn created risks for the organisation.

To address this, Michelle has introduced a very structured approach to our filing system. She has built  a complete classification hierarchy from the ground up, a system which is aligned with the official requirements of the Records and Disposal Schedules.

Michelle’s work is not done yet though; there’s still a big job ahead to move and file important information into the official records management system from its current dispersed location throughout our broader systems.

She has made records management simpler and more accessible for all staff and is backing this up with training everyone in how to use the new improved and compliant system. The work she has done is already starting to make a difference, improving how information is managed, reducing risk, and setting Council up for a more efficient and sustainable way of working.

Thanks Michelle for your effort and dedication on our behalf.
