Higher Places Exercise: Community Preparedness in Action
Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council is encouraging community members to get involved in the upcoming Higher Places Exercise on Thursday 19 November 2026, with a full afternoon of emergency preparedness activities, community participation and entertainment planned.
Being prepared for an emergency is everyone’s responsibility. Understanding local emergency procedures, knowing what to expect when warnings are issued and being familiar with community evacuation arrangements can make a significant difference when it matters most.
The Higher Places Exercise provides an important opportunity for residents to put this knowledge into practice in a planned, supportive environment, helping to strengthen Wujal Wujal’s collective readiness and resilience.
There will also be raffles featuring prizes including a mower and portable fridge/freezer. Winners must be present to collect their prizes.
Why Preparedness Matters Living in Far North Queensland means understanding the potential impacts of severe weather and other emergency events.
Exercises such as Higher Places are an important part of building community resilience. They provide an opportunity to practise emergency arrangements, familiarise residents with local procedures and reinforce the importance of being ready to respond when required.
Importantly, preparedness is not just about having a plan. It’s about understanding that plan, knowing your responsibilities and working together to keep our community safe.
By participating, residents can build confidence in what to do during an emergency while helping strengthen the community’s overall readiness.
A prepared community is a resilient community. Together, we can help keep Wujal Wujal safe.
